Chandler Bikeway Mural Swag

CHANDLER 2

Some times inspiration just hits you out of no where. It doesn’t happen as often as we would like so when it does, you have to ride that wave like you grew up in San Diego California’s Pacific Beach. Then there are times when inspiration knocks you flat on your stylish little ass. This happens even less often, so moments like this, you just stop what you’re doing, cancel all other plans and get to work. id imagine that, the type of inspiration I just described looks something like the beautiful piece of art pictured above. My girl and I drove past this Mural while scouting for locations for our next photoshoot. We literally had to stop the car and take it all in. My initial Plan was to take a few shots of my cool Red and Black look, but hey, sometimes, the background should really be in the foreground. So i thought i’d let this beautiful mural stand alone…

The Chandler Bikeway

The Mural pictured above is just one of the many beautiful works of art found on the last mile stretch of the Chandler Bikeway. The Chandler Bikeway is a beautiful bike path that stretches from residential Burbank to North Hollywood. The trail sits on top of the old Burbank Branch of the Southern Pacific Transportation Company Railroad. I use to run the bike trail years ago while training for a half marathon, and I would often take a book with me, sit on a bench and watch all the beautiful people fly by on their bikes, skate boards, roller blades, and of  course, wagons. Its the perfect place to take the family for a bike ride, or even take the date for an afternoon stroll. I focused on the last mile of the trail to highlight one of my favorite color combinations: Black and red

I picked up both the jeans and the shirt from Forever 21 while shopping for some basics. Forever 21 is great for finding inexpensive, stylish cloths  but you have to watch yourself because its easy to leave this place looking like a 16 year old boy. So please be aware of what “trends” work for you and what you should probably leave to your teenage nephew. This look cost me less than $50 and I couldn’t of looked any cooler. Check it out!

You don’t cook Brah???

Listen, I can go on and on about why it is important to cook. I can pour out paragraph after paragraph and sentence after sentence on the subject. I can talk for hours about how a nice, home cooked meal has turned an angry lover of mine into putty in my hand. I can tell you over and over again that women love men who can cook but hey, how about I let Janice Dickinson break it down for you:

I like the way he handled himself in the kitchen. I like men who cook. Men who cook are generally good lovers.”

-Janice Dickinson

Look, it’s simple science. Men who cook, break headboards. So Why don’t you drop the Xbox controller for a second, pick up a f***ing spatula and get to flippin’.

This weekend I got out on the grill and cooked a little Lunch for my girl and I and I looked damn good doing it if I say so myself. So I’ll highlight the meal and the look for all you future chefs out there.

The Meal

OG Surf and Turf: Steak with Gorgonzola Herb Butter, Sautéed Lemon and Herb Shrimp, Balsamic glazed asparagus and butternut squash risotto.

When you want to impress, go with a surf n' turf!
When you want to impress, go with a surf n’ turf!
Steak 2
Steak tip: When you cook a steak, Do Not over season. The star should be the meat. Salt and Pepper is all you need. If you are a lover of steak sauce, instead of drenching your steak in it, just baste the steak with a little sauce while its cooking. I grilled this steak for about 12 minutes. 7 minutes on one side and 5 on the other. It came out medium well which is how I like it!
You gotta' have veggies. I have a couple of tricks to make my vegetables pop. Number 1 is butter and Number 2 is balsamic vinegar. I added both to this asparagus and grilled it in foil. It came out with a delicious buttery glaze.

Look you don’t have to be a gourmet chef but you should have a couple of recipes in your back pocket when you need to impress. Surf and turf is always a hit in my book. I’ve went ahead and added links to the recipes I used for my Surf n’ Turf. See below and get to grilling.

Fall Into Fall the Gentleman’s Guide part 3: Texture

The final segment of my fall guide is probably one of the most important: texture. texture is like the red headed step child of mens personal style. It does so much for a mans outfit, but we hardly pay texture any mind. Shame on us. Then again who can blame us. No one really dives in deep and thinks about what types of textures they want to play with each day and I don’t expect you to after reading this post. What I want to do is make you aware of texture so that you can add a little extra flavor to your outfits. Adding a knitted tie to you look instead of a basic silk or cotton tie will add dimension and depth to your otherwise normal look. Textured scarves, hats, even the textures on your shoes play a key role in making your look pop.

Im not going to go over all the different types of fabric and woven materials. The purpose of this guide is to make things simple. So just remember texture is anything woven, or knitted, or  anything that course to the touch. take a look at the few examples below. Adding pieces like this to your basic wardrobe will add another dimension to your personal style. Texture is important.

Scarves
Scarves
Knitted Ties
Knitted Ties
Shoes
Shoes and Belts

The trick is to buy some items that have a little texture to them.  Adding pieces like these to your wardrobe make it so that you don’t have to think about these things. You can just toss on your cloths and go. The basics are good and very important but when we want to go beyond the basics and add a little extra “style” to our personal style, texture is a good place to start.

Thats sums up the Fall into fall Guide. Refer back to these post for a little inspiration and guidance when shopping for you fall wardrobe. Remember to Add color, layer and play with different textures. Follow these three simple steps and you’ll be on your way to becoming one stylish Gent this autumn! #swerve

Fall Into Fall. The Gentleman’s Guide, Part 2: Layering

Part 2 of our guide to fall is all about Layering. Being from California, where it’s summer all year round, I only understand layering from a style standpoint and thats very important to know. because of this I can’t talk to much about layering to beat the cold, or how to wrap your scarf to protect your face from frost bite (I think that’s what they do in New York, right?). I layer in the fall because it looks good and I’m not ashamed to say it! but here is a little guide I found online via my good buddy google that breaks down how many layers to wear according to number of degrees it is outside.

BLG-1964_Mens-Layering-570x461

There you go: Science! Now lets get into the style of it all, but lets set some ground rules first shall we? We don’t want to walk down the street looking like we just stepped off of a Milan fashion week runway:

Take note. This is what you look like when you decide to put on every single article of clothing you own. Keep it simple.
Take note. This is what you look like when you decide to put on every single article of clothing you own. Keep it simple.

When it comes to layering. I have just a few pointers. 1: Remember to keep it simple. You want every article of clothing to be visible and stand out in its own way. Adding too many layers to your outfit just looks cluttered. 2: Play with textures. I’ll be covering texture in the final segment of this guide, but for now, just remember that texture can really make the difference between mundane and exrtordinary. Also here’s a little tip, throw on a scarf or a beanie for Christ’s sake. Accessorize. Make your fall look your own by beating the cold AND looking good at the same time. There’s so much to work with in the fall. Check it out.

Sweaters, scarves, hoodies, cardigans, boots, beanies, gloves. Look at these examples of fall layering and get inspired!

Black On Black On Bradbury

Hop on the Los Angeles metro’s red Line; get off at Pershing Square; walk down 5th and cut a left onto Broadway and you’ll make your way to 304 S broadway, The BradBury Building. From the outside it is a very unsuspecting looking building but walking inside you quickly understand what the fuss is all about. That’s why we chose to highlight a minimalistic all black look here. The beautiful scenery almost elevated this simplistic look to another level.

A stop on most walking tours of Downtown Los Angeles, the historic Bradbury Building is a stunning example of late 1800 american architecture.
A stop on most walking tours of Downtown Los Angeles, the historic Bradbury Building is a stunning example of late 1800 american architecture.

Built in 1983 the Bradbury Building automatically grabs your attention as you walk into the light filled victorian courtyard for the first time. The court rises almost fifty feet with open cage elevators, marble stairs, and ornate iron railings. Still an operating Office building, guest are only allowed into the courtyard but trust me that is enough for a sensory overload.

The Look

Black On Black On Black

We all know I love color, but one of my favorite looks of all time, is ALL BLACK. When suited up, to me nothing compares to black on black. Black just seems to cut and shape the body in such a flattering way, making even the most doughy man look as sharp as a tack. Street style is the same. All black is easy, edgy and so ridiculously cool it should be illegal! I literally threw on my favorite black wing tipped boots, and black basics and I couldn’t have looked any cooler. Check it out.

The combination of this simple black look against the striking details of the Bradbury’s Victorian courtyard is, dare I say, perfect in so many ways. Every shot was something for the record books. Raw, rough, dark, but also vibrant, warm and glamorous at the same time.

All Black 8All Black 6All Black 11All Black 5

So there you have it. Go out and re create this look by buying yourself some all black basics. Remember its not about how much you spend with your basics. If they fit well, throw it in the bag. You can always dress up your basics with more expensive statement pieces.

And if you find yourself wandering aimlessly in downtown Los angeles, stop by The Bradbury and take in all the awesomeness that surrounds you. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Fall into Fall the Gentleman’s Guide Part 1: Color

If you didn’t know by now, fashion changes with the seasons, and for the average guy keeping up can be quite a bit of work. Because of this I thought I’d briefly touch on fall and give you a quick guide on how to make this beloved season your own. I broke the guide up into 3 parts to allow us to focus on each component and keep things fun. The 3 parts of the guide are: Color, Layering, and texture. How about we jump right in and talk about fall colors.

Color

Just for you dapper young gentleman I’ve provided a color chart below, because we all love visuals! Looking at the chart we can see that fall is a little bit more than brown and green. We have so many rich and vibrant colors to choose from, and I want to encourage you to really dive into the season and spice up those earth tones with a little richness. Burnt Orange, Cranberry, Deep purple, Camel, the list can go on and on. And that’s the main point. See I told you it’d be quick. Use the picture below to guide you into a whole new world of color.

Personally for fall I gravitate to deep more rich colors. I feel they add a sense of strength and masculinity to my style. But don't be afraid to brighten things up.

Kanye’s always right!!

I wanted to touch briefly on fads and the classic man’s fear of them. I believe one of the most important components to a human beings conscious mind is identity. Learning who we are and what makes us who we are. Ever since we were children we have been taught that we are special and one of a kind. This is true, however the idea of identifying ourselves as separate from the rest of the world can also be a crutch; especially when it comes to fashion and personal style. Fads and trends have no place in “personal style” because they are everything but personal or original. So a lot of fashion conscious men tend to shy away from the trendy to stand out in the crowd. But what if, what is trendy actually compliments your personal style? What if, what’s popping actually pops on you? The answer my friend is very simple: You put that shit on!

Now, I have not been a fan of the oversized or long cut men’s shirts since they first popped up on the scene. Why? because they were too trendy for my taste. Men all over the globe, wearing t-shirts and sweaters that fell down past the knees (which is still too long in my book.) was not my cup of tea. The look wasn’t bad, in fact in some cases it looked pretty cool, but I had made up my mind that it was a trend I wouldn’t chase after.

Fast forward to  last week. I was out shopping for basics with my beautiful partner in crime and we come across the shirts. After about 5 minutes of shit talking and bad mouthing every man who ever wore one of these swag killers (especially Kanye West), my lady says, “try it on and see how it looks”… Without thinking, I do just that, and OH SHIT!!! It looked good!! It looked real good. I stared at myself in the mirror and thought “Damn-it! Kanye is ALWAYS right”. Then I bought the shirt and two others just like it and walked out of the store with a bag full of fads! Check out the look…

The lesson I learned here is simple: Fads aren’t all that bad. Personal style doesn’t always have to be different. Sometimes what’s trendy will compliment your personal style perfectly. So don’t talk shit…just try it on! Unless you see someone wearing a shirt that falls down to the ankles like a sun-dress. In that case, talk all the shit you want!

Purple Reign: The bold fall suit 3 ways

Fall is in full effect and I love it. All the deep and rich colors that work their way from the back of the closet onto the streets just makes me feel all warm inside. Fall is a beautiful season and it is way bigger than brown, and orange. I love to play with color in the fall to stand out a bit more and to truly represent the season, so I picked up this sharp, deep purple suit from New Look, and highlighted it just for you.  As a little style bonus I rocked this suit 3 different ways to show you how to get the most out of your “dress cloths”.

The Evening Suit

Classic cool here. Simple sleek and to the point. Pull this look out when its time to impress. The color is bold but classy at the same time. pair it with a solid tie and black shoes to get that red carpet reation.

I kept the  shoes and accessories very simple. The shoes are polished and black and you can’t go wrong with that. The Nike leather band watch has a pop of color but the design is fairly simple. I added a bit of contrast with the Hugo pocket square which helped bring some of those classic fall colors into the mix and finally I finished the look off with a Shipp and 36th handmade felt lapel rose in black.

Dressed down but dressed up Look

maroon 6MAROON 2

To Dress Down the suit I lost the tie and added some layers. Pairing this suit with a denim shirt and zip down hoodie turned this red carpet look into your everyday semi casual go-to. The beanie added that extra urban flair or “swag” as I like to call it. Notice how I still added the pocket square and opted for the classic round toed brown shoes instead of sneakers. Details like these are what makes this a “semi-casual” look. You can have a meet and greet with a potential client in this outfit and then hit the town later without skipping a beat.

Casual Gentleman

maroon 5MAROON 4

To Dress that suit down even further, loose the pants and toss on your denim! I paired the New Look suit jacket with a slim cut denim shirt and my favorite pair of jeans in my closet (I got them at H&M for 30 bucks and they fit like a dream). I finished the look off with a Shipp and 36th Redwood daisy Lapel Flower to add a little extra pop of color.

And there you have it! The bold fall suit 3 different ways. Play around with the combination as you see fit. try throwing on your favorite solid V neck T-shirt instead of the denim shirt in the casual look or trading in your jacket for a nice cardigan sweater in the semi casual look. the possibilities are endless. How about you go out there and embrace fall in a new and stylish way. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Go Green 2: A Day at Lake Balboa

Inspired by my latest post “Go Green”, I would like to give you (drum roll)…

“Go Green 2: A day at balboa.”

Look, I get it. Maybe you’re not ready to jump all in, throw on a forest green 3 piece suit and a shiny green jumper coat. I understand. That’s why we decided to highlight this semi-casual look; all about the green accents… And what a better place to shoot than our beautiful Lake Balboa as well as Anthony C. Beilenson Park in Van Nuys, California.

I put this quick look together to inspire you to play with color a bit more in effort to explore your imaginative side. Long gone are the days of black, blue and greys! (Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love what a well-tailored black suit can do for a man. But I’ll save that for another post) Men everywhere are brightening up their wardrobes with color. In terms of livening up ones look, you can’t go wrong with green! Green represents strength, health and growth. Like the many tall and strong trees that wear this color every day, a man in green should be viewed in the same way; Tall, strong, and well grounded. We took this look to the park to show you how adding even just a tad bit of this glorious color to your outfit will make you stand out like a great oak! All photos taken by our multi-talented photographer and shoot director Nika Gocha

There you have it Gents! Your quick introduction to color. A few key points to remember here:

1: When you want to draw attention to a specific article of clothing in your outfit, make sure to minimize the accessories as to not draw the attention away from the star.

2: When it comes to our friend, the color green, remember that it’s a bold, bright color so less is more. Wearing all green from head to toe is not recommended. That being said, don’t let it scare you either. Take some risk today, with color.

‘Till next time gents. This is Mr. Shipp…signing off!
